2 Days Safari | Lake Ndutu and Central Serengeti

Tanzania Northern Circuit

With this 2 days Fly-in Safari tour you can meet up with the Great Migration in the Lake Ndutu area! This package also includes a visit of the central Serengeti (Seronera area). After an early transfer from your beach hotel to Zanzibar airport, you embark on a 1hr 20 minutes domestic flight directly into the southern Serengeti ecosystem and land in Lake Ndutu airstrip.

A full Safari day is reserved for a visit of the legendery Serengeti National Park, home to an incredible variety of plant and animal species. It is known for the “Big Five” (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros), as well as cheetahs, giraffes, wildebeests, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and many other mammals, reptiles, and bird species.

You will sleep for 1 night in Africa Safari South Serengeti Lodge, where you stay in a fully furnished comfort tent with a private bathroom in the middle of the wilderness.

Day 1:

After the pick up from your hotel to Zanzibar airport, you will embark on an early domestic direct flight from Zanzibar to Lake Ndutu airstrip, located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This area marks the southern part of the vast Serengeti ecosystem. After a short drive you will enter the legendary Serengeti National Park, recognized for its exceptional value and ecological significance, leading to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The conservation efforts in the park are aimed at preserving its biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural processes.

The Serengeti has been a hub of scientific research for decades, contributing to understanding of animal behavior, ecology, and ecosystem dynamics. Visiting the park offers a chance to connect with nature and witness some of the world’s most incredible wildlife and natural wonders. Please follow the instructions of your guide to help preserve the park’s unique ecosystems and support its long-term sustainability.

Day 2:

Today you will explore the Lake Ndutu area, a seasonal alkaline lake that plays a significant role in supporting wildlife and birdlife, especially during the Great Migration. Ndutu is a vital stopover for animals during the wildebeest calving season from January to March. The lake’s abundant water and fresh grasses attract a large number of herbivores, which in turn attracts predators like lions and cheetahs. Because of this presence of water and the resulting concentration of animals, Lake Ndutu is considered one of the best spots for wildlife viewing in Africa. Safari guests have the opportunity to witness predator-prey interactions and the stunning sight of thousands of wildebeest and zebras grazing on the surrounding plains.

Lions, cheetahs, small-spotted genets, caracals, elephants, giraffes, leopards, owls, and striped hyenas are the principal animal species found around this lake. It won’t take long before you see all five of the big five animals because it’s the only site where you can find them all in one small area. The six different species of big cats—leopards, lions, cheetahs, caracals, servals, and wildcats—can only be found in the Ndutu region.

Your Safari guide will bring you back to Lake Ndutu airstrip (late afternoon) for your return flight to Zanzibar, followed by a transfer to your beach hotel.

Africa Safari South Serengeti

Africa Safari South Serengeti is a comfortable Safari Lodge located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, only a few kilometers from Lake Ndutu. This area plays a vital role in the annual Great Migration and marks the southern end of the Serengeti ecosystem. The lodge offers quick access to the Ngorongoro crater, Lake Ndutu and the Serengeti plains. The nearby airstrip offers connections to the other major airstrips and direct flights to destinations like Zanzibar.

Lake Ndutu and its surroundings are famous for the calving season of the wilderbeests, a highlight of the annual Great Migration. The short rains in November and December provide nutritious pastures for the wildebeest, which stay in the area until the end of the long rains. Most calves are born in January and February. Between April and November, the south-eastern plains dry out, but there is still an abundance of game in the area. There are in fact two water sources, Lake Masek and Lake Ndutu, where many wild animals come to drink.

The spacious Lodge offers 12 accommodations that form two wings with a restaurant tent and a bar/lounge tent in the middle. The classic safari comfort tents with 32m² are fully furnished with locally made furniture and have ensuite bathrooms, separated from the room by a tent cloth, with a shower, European toilet and sink. Every tent has its own private 8m² terrace with a comfortable seating area. Enjoy the sounds and sights of nature from the comfort of your terrace, you might even see an elephant or giraffe walking by!
